Scholarship(s)

The Roach Scholarship provides assistance to Ohio University students who are actively involved in the First United Methodist Church. The interested candidate should meet these criteria:

• Active membership of First United Methodist Church in Athens Ohio or be an active member in the Wesley Student Center, Kappa Phi, etc.

• Active participation in other church related activities beyond membership (e.g. student group, music ministry, community service, nursery, etc.)

• Earned GPA of 3.0 or above at Ohio University 

The Wesley Scholarship provides educational assistance to members of First United Methodist Church, Athens Ohio. Students can use this to attend any institution of higher education or training. Current seniors and recent graduates (within five years) of local high schools are encouraged to apply. This is a one-time scholarship designed to assist students in their transition from high school to higher education. 

• Active membership of First United Methodist Church in Athens Ohio.

• Active participation in church and community related ministries beyond membership (e.g. student group, music ministry, community service, nursery, etc.)

• Earned GPA of 3.0 or above in high school 

To apply for these scholarships candidates should submit the following materials to the church office: 

• Letter to the Higher Education Committee of FUMC explaining interest in the scholarship. This should be a cover letter explaining why the candidate is seeking this scholarship and would be a worthy recipient. The letter should include a description of church and community involvement.

• One or more letters of recommendation documenting church membership, participation, and engagement. Please ask this to be sent directly to the church office. The letter should indicate who the scholarship applicant is and what scholarship they are applying for.

• DARS from Ohio University (for the Roach Scholarship only).

• Letter from High School Guidance Counselor indicating high school GPA and any outstanding qualities (for the Wesley Scholarship only).
