Weekly Schedule

We meet Sunday nights from 6 PM – 7:30 PM at FUMC.  We share a meal and fellowship:

December Youth Group Activities

December 11th - Wrap and bake for our adopted youth.

We will meet in fellowship hall for our weekly dinner and then work on wrapping the gifts we bought and then doing some holiday baking for Bassett House.  We will need lots of hands so bring a friend or two to share in the Christmas cheer.

December 18th - Christmas Party

Join us for a night of caroling and rejoicing on December 18th.  Party will be held at Daryl and Ally’s house (55 Elmwood Place) from 6:00 – 7:30.  We will go caroling so be sure to wear something warm.  After caroling we will gather for treats and a present exchange.  So here is what you need to remember:

Dress warmly for caroling

Bring a $10 present to exchange.  This year the present must start with the letter M (for Merry or Mary)

If you would like, bring a plate of Christmas treats to share

Invite a friend or two.  The more voices the better.

CHRISTMAS DAY – no youth group

SEE YOU IN JANUARY FOR MORE FUN!

Upcoming Events:

Sunday School

Youth Sunday School Students Take The Journey During Advent   Join us for Youth Sunday School through the month of December as we study The Journey by Adam Hamilton. This study will correspond to the study that other groups in the congregation are doing as well as the sermons and lessons that Pastor Wendy will be sharing in church. Hope you can make it for all or even some of the lessons, don’t worry if you can’t make it to all of them.  Last week we talked about Mary, the mother of Jesus.  Today, we learned about Joseph, and talked about the quote “you are who your friends are”.  We won’t meet the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  On December 11th we learn that God walks with us in the valleys of our life journey. And on December 18th we will learn that we can choose to confess Jesus as Lord and Savior and claim his unconditional love and grace.

Mission Trips

Finding Hope in the City - Youth Experience Communities of God’s Love in Philadelphia

What do Caroline, Keanu, James, Emma, Kirstin and Anthony have in common?  We are the youth delegation from First UMC Athens that spent spring break in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania supported by the gifts and prayers of this church!

Many, many thanks for your support in this trip.  My goal for the group was to give them a wide view of the city and to work with many ministries so that they could meet many people whose lives are changed in positive ways by the day to day life choices of God’s people.

In all the ministries where we volunteered, one love was consistent.  All people are beloved Children of God.  Many things can bring a person into a poverty situation and many people we met this week were willing to share their story.  We met people doing everyday things…eating a meal, playing checkers, jumping rope, and shopping the free-store for clothes.

We also experienced the sights and tastes of the city from traditional cheesesteaks to Puerto-rican family style dinner, to eclectic styles of West Philly, variety of Reading Market and our own concoctions. Our youth are good cooks!  We bought transpasses for subway and bus travel and the youth led us on a photo trip through the city of art, history, and culture.

Each day our home was a hospitality house with a ministry called the Simple Way.  Each morning some of us had a time of prayer with staff in that ministry.  We found ourselves a home for the week and in the midst of many evident life challenges of people around us, we were able to both give and receive the simple blessing of love.

Keanu challenged us to give and live and love without fear…and I pray that we continue to find in ourselves the courage to do so!

“Rebuilding Hope 10 - Here and There”

Rebuilding Hope Youth Mission Ministries – New Orleans Trip

Once again the Youth continued their work in New Orleans during Spring Break "10", March 20 - 27, 2010.

Rebuilding Hope involved projects such as clean-up, installing dry wall, painting, replacing roofs, hanging doors, land clearing and landscaping.   They had a chance to talk and work alongside the homeowners and hear their stories of survival.  Our days were structured in such a way that also gave everyone time to rest and reflect.

Local Spring Break Mission Trip March 21-24, 2010    Jason Rhoads and Kevin Dael headed up a three-day local mission experience for youth who stayed in town.  They helped with Monday Lunch, Athens Food Pantry, and ReUse Industries. If you would like to read about their adventures, click here.
