Members of the University Faith Association and partners from the Athens community are sponsoring A Day of Hope for Haiti. The event will take place on Friday, February 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the 1st United Methodist Church, 2 South College Street.
The University Interfaith Association is an umbrella organization of religious organizations with a presence on the Ohio University Campus. Organizations participating in a Day of Hope include Christ Lutheran Church, Christ the King University Parish, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, First Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, Hillel at Ohio University, the Muslim Students Association, UCM: Center for Spiritual Growth and Social Justice, and the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Athens.
Everyone is welcome to join together for a simple meal with live music. Feel free to stay the whole time or drop in for part of the evening. Together, we can make a difference in the midst of the destruction and organize for a brighter future. Please bring your checkbook and a dessert to share.
Participants will have the opportunity to give to the charitable organization(s) of their choice. We will be collecting money for a variety of well managed relief and development organizations doing good work on the ground in Haiti. In addition to organizations related to specific faith traditions, donations will be taken up for the work of Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross, and UNICEF.
Music will include:
Between 5:30 and 6:30 Music from Haitian composers performed by Steven Huang of the School of Music and Canes Nicholas, a graduate student in orchestral performance from Port au Prince, Haiti
Between 6:30 and 7:15 Student musicians from Hillel, the Jewish community at Ohio University.
Between 7:15 and 8:00 The Rebuilding Hope Dixieland Band
