Monday Lunch When the Community Ministries Committee of First United Methodist Church felt led to help meet the needs of the poor in the Athens community, the dream of Monday Lunch began. The first meal was served on January 28, 1998. The Committee was so moved by the obvious need for such an event, that they decided to immediately change their plans and serve the meal weekly starting February 23, 1998. Since that time, with only a few exceptions, Monday Lunch has provided a free, nutritious meal each week. Monday Lunch has grown since those first few meals and now serves anywhere from 100 to 150 guest each week. Not only do the guests get a good meal, often with leftovers to take home, but they also have an opportunity for fellowship.
